Soft Contact Lenses
Disposable
and Planned Replacement
Features
& Benefits:
Disposable and Planned
Replacement Contact Lenses offer the patient a healthy, comfortable and
convenient contact lens option.
Wear
Schedule: With
disposable or planned replacement contact lenses, your doctor will prescribe the
optimal wear schedule within the manufacturer and FDA guidelines. In most cases,
disposable lenses should be worn during the day (about 16 hours) and removed
before bedtime. At the end of the wear schedule the lenses are discarded.
Cleaning
& Disinfecting:
Disposable lenses must be
rinsed every morning and cleaned and disinfected with a multi-purpose or
all-in-one solution every night. Cleaning with an enzyme cleaner is not
necessary.
Daily
Disposables
Features
& Benefits:
This lens is the cleanest,
healthiest, and most convenient contact lens available to most patients. By
discarding the lens daily, the patient eliminates the buildup of calcium and
protein deposits on the lenses. This also eliminates the worry associated with a
lost or torn contact lens.
Wear
Schedule: With
daily disposable lenses, a new lens is worn everyday. At the end of the day, the
lens is simply thrown away, and a new lens is opened the next morning. Daily
disposables are great for patients who wear contact lenses for special
circumstances and prefer to wear eyeglasses during their daily routine.
Cleaning
& Disinfecting:
A saline rinse is only
necessary if the lens becomes uncomfortable during the day.
Conventional
Wear Contact Lenses
Features
& Benefits:
Conventional wear soft contact
lenses offer the comfort and variable wearing times associated with most soft
contact lens products.
Wear
Schedule: Conventional
contact lenses are worn daily as long as the lenses remain undamaged-typically
from six to twelve months. At the end of this time, the lenses normally have
unhealthy calcium and protein deposits which no longer can be removed with
proper cleaning. At that point, the lenses are discarded and a new pair must be
purchased.
Cleaning
& Disinfecting:
This type of contact lens has
the most rigid cleaning schedule. The lenses must be cleaned with a daily
cleanser, rinsed and disinfected nightly. In the morning the lenses must be
rinsed before they are used. The lenses also must be cleaned with an enzyme
cleaner for eight hours one night per week.
Toric
Contact Lenses
Toric
soft contact lenses are available in disposable and conventional wear modalities
and have all the benefits associated with other soft contact lens products.
These lenses are specially designed for people with astigmatism.
Bifocal
Contact Lenses
Many
people are now eligible candidates for bifocal soft contact lenses, which have
become very popular since the introduction of several new lens types. These
contact lenses provide all of the benefits of soft, disposable lenses and have
the added advantage of helping people who have trouble seeing up close and far
away.
